Ever wondered what it’s like to walk in the muddy boots of a dog walker? It’s not just about the physical walks—it’s about the bond, the care, and the love we share for each wagging tail. While the profession sometimes gets a bad rap, for the majority of us, it’s a passion-driven lifestyle filled with heart-warming moments and unforgettable connections.
Prepping for the Day:
My day begins bright and early, fuelled by coffee and a quick glance at the weather forecast. I make sure my van is fully stocked – leashes, balls, poo bags, a pouch brimming with high-value all natural treats and towels for those inevitable muddy paws. The excitement builds as I set off to pick up my first dog of the day.
Walking Adventures:
I’m lucky to carry out our dog walks in such beautiful and varied landscapes. Whether we’re trekking up the rolling hills of the South Downs, following the peaceful trails along the Adur River, or exploring the scenic parks that surround us, every walk is a new adventure. The stunning views, fresh air, and tranquil surroundings make it a joy to spend my days outdoors with the dogs. On some mornings, we even take a trip to the beach, where the dogs can enjoy the freedom of running along the shore, feeling the sand beneath their paws, and splashing in the waves.
Managing the different personalities of the dogs is always a fun challenge. Some dogs are social butterflies, while others prefer a quieter pace, and each walk requires a careful balance of energy and attention. It’s never the same twice—one dog might want to race ahead, while another stops every few steps for a sniff, and I love the creativity it takes to keep everyone happy and safe.
Wrapping up:
As the day winds down and I drop off my last Barking Buddy, I always enjoy sending clients photos and notes about their dogs’ adventures. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of my job—keeping owners connected with their pets while they’re at work. Looking back on the day, I feel so lucky to have such amazing clients who keep me busy doing what I truly love.
Challenges and Joys:
Of course, dog walking isn’t always smooth sailing—sudden downpours, poo rollers, and the occasional runaway squirrel can definitely keep things interesting. But the joys far outweigh the challenges. Every wagging tail, every happy bark, and every goofy slobbery grin makes it all worthwhile. There’s never a dull moment, and it’s those moments that remind me why I love this job.
Being a dog walker means embracing adventure, patience and a whole lot of love. It’s more than just a job it’s a way of life and it’s important to remember that not all dog walkers fit the same mold. For many of us, this job is driven by passion, commitment, and a deep love for dogs.
